In The Phantom Of the Opera , Carlotta has a spray from a perfume-like bottled spritzed into her Mouth ?

There is a crystal bottle of somewhat amber liquid that is sprayed into Carlotta's mouth before she sings , What is that liquid ? Is it true that they used this in actual operas and theatres? In The Phantom Of the Opera , Carlotta has a spray from a perfume-like bottled spritzed into her Mouth ?

ENTERTAINER's SECRET

THROAT SPRAY

Hydrating spray for the dry, hoarse or sore throat that quickly improves throat comfort and vocal quality.

INGREDIENTS: Entertainers Secret is formulated to resemble natural secretions. Sodium carboxymethylcellulose, aloe vera gel and glycerin - each a proxy for a naturally secreted type of mucus (globular, strand and sheet) - are blended into a buffered, aqueous hypertonic solution. Unlike some other sore throat remedies, it does NOT contain numbing anesthetics, alcohol, antiseptics, analgesics, antihistamines, decongestants, anti-inflammatory agents or any other ';medicinal'; ingredient that can produce unwanted side effects. The improved honey-apple flavor imparts a pleasant mellow taste.

DIRECTIONS FOR USE: Spray in the back of the sore or dry throat while sayin g';AH-H-H';. For relief and irritation deep in the throat, take a quick breath inward while spraying. To insure that the upper throat is reached: tilt the head slightly backward and spray twice into each nostril while quickly inhaling. Any brief ';tingling'; sensation will be quickly replaced by a pleasant soothing feeling. spray liberally and repeat as often as necessary to eliminate dryness.

WHY NOT JUST DRINK WATER?

Drinking lots of water is good, a healthy and a smart idea for many reasons. Before extended periods of vocalizing one should drink a lot of water. But the water passes through the esophagus into the digestive system and must get into the circulatory system before it can be delivered to specific dehydrated areas such as the throat or larynx. Very little ingested water comes into direct contact with these dehydrated surfaces. Plus the body's mucous-secreting glands often just can't produce enough replacement moisturizing materials quickly enough to keep up with the increased need.

Answer # 2 offers very detailed info. and the issue is completely individual and personal to the actor/singer.

I've worked with two Divas who did things others might have found odd. One used just a teaspoon of honey, the other wanted fresh, Chocolate Ice Cream.

No offense to Stars, but any actual benefit might be negligible. Regarding Opera, or even general Choral performances, there may be a days break between, AND in rehearsals, so often the singer ';MARKS'; the performance, to save the voice.

Unless specific to any context of that play, or any reference to it as part of the plot, I suspect it was included as a natural situation a singer effects for themselves, no matter the formulation of any substance.
not sure of the impetus for your question but i do want to point out that the spays used for vocal performers can sometimes be a little detrimental. in a lot of cases, there is a numbing agent that allows you to take away the feeling in your throat so that a performance is easier to get through. however, the soreness is derived from the chords coming together, which, despite the spray, still happens even with the spray. you can cause more damage to your chords this way because you're not doing anything to heal the situation...just numb your throat so you can do more damage and you won't feel it. this may not have even been a necessary answer but hey...now you know!
